Site 1

When you are not more than 30 minutes away from the first site, Solomon says to you, “You know my grandfather is good friends with the Oloibon, the chief of this tribe. Yes, yes, he actually does! They both went to the same school when they were little. The two best students in their class. Their teacher always said that it’s because they were born at the same time as the Wildebeests.”

He lets out a hearty laughter as he says this.

“Did you know that the Wildebeests are also called Gnu? They travel over 1000 miles (1500 kms) during the great migration. They are truly amazing creatures.”

As you arrive at the village, the Oloibon is waiting for you in his red and blue ceremonial Shuka. He will give you permission to visit the site that his people are guarding, if you can pass his test.

Hints

The Maasai Chief is expecting you to tell him the name of a season and the month within it. Have you looked through all the materials you have? Perhaps an item discusses seasons.

Have you already read the flyers for all the lodges? They seem to contain more than just advertisements about themselves.

Try to focus on the pamphlet that has the map for Site 1. It might have something that could be helpful for this challenge.

The pamphlet for Camp Sinyati talks about the Shuka cloths worn by the Maasai. This is also the only tribe on the map with Site 1.

The Maasai Chief welcomed you wearing his ceremonial Shuka. His image is on the envelope and the website.

Does this attire hide any meaning?

The pamphlet says that number of vertical lines in a group indicate the season and the horizontal lines in a group the month a person was born.

Have you paid close attention to what Solomon said about his grandfather's birth?

Show Explanation
Hidden contentThe Camp Sinyati pamphlet tells you how to determine the season and month of a person’s birth from the ceremonial Shuka worn by a person.

From this you can now deduce that the chief is born in the nkokua season (one vertical line on his ceremonial Shuka), i.e. the first season. The month of his birth was march (two horizontal lines on his ceremonial Shuka), i.e. the second month within the nkokua season.

According to Solomon, the Chief of this tribe was born in the month as his grandfather, who were both born when wildebeests are calving.
